Brittle Prickly Pear: Opuntia fragilis

Brittle Prickley Pear
This botanical is a threatened species found  near our home, near the Chippewa River.  It grows in sandy, lightly shaded soil.
Legend has it that this was food for the buffalo and that they carried it from the west.  It is the only native cactus in our area that I'm aware of.

Showy Lady's-slipper: botanical

Cypripedium Reginaea: botanical

This is the state flower of Minnesota.  I was teaching a watercolor workshop at Grand Marais one July weekend . One of my students told us about these beautiful native orchids, blooming near her cabin. We went as a class to paint them.

Evening Primrose

Evening Primrose: botanical sketch

This is another native plant of America.  It has medicinal properties and has a wonderful orange blossom scent.

Fern painted at Mayowood, Rochester, MN

Fern: botanical

Painted at Mayowood in Rochester, MN where the famous Mayo brothers once lived. I was biding my time during an art fair at Mayowood, painting this specimen with time and patience.  I was trying to mimic the detail of the fern as closely as possible.
It sort of looks look like a pressed fern.

Fireweed

Fireweed Botanical

This plant is so named because it often appears after a burn. It grows up to four feet tall and has lovely flowers.  I believe it's a native to north America.

Myosotis: Fireweed

Forget-Me-Not
Myosotis laxa

Ram's head Lady's-slipper
Cypripedium arietinum
This plant is on the national endangered species list.  Although it does grow, rarely, in our area, I've never seen it and have had to paint it from photos.

Snow Trillium

Snow Trillium
Trillium nivale
This is a dwarf species that does actually bloom so early that it can often be found on south facing slopes with snow.  It is a threatened species.  I found it near our home in early april, blooming near wild leeks.
The painting is at least two times the actual size of the plant.  The leaves are a fuzzy greenish blue.
